NGUYEN HOANG MINH KHOI _ NgKhoi _ Nguyen Khoi
Khoi is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He is best known for his digital works.
Nguyen Khoi graduated from high school with a major in the sciences department. He earned a bachelor's degree in multimedia arts from the University of Fine Arts in Ho Chi Minh City and is currently pursuing a master's degree in fine arts at Falmouth University.
Furthermore, Khoi participated in artist-in-residence programs such as Tokyo University of the Arts in Japan, ERG in Belgium, and Chosun University in Korea.
In addition, he is also a co-founder of Chinbo Collective which is a contemporary art group in Vietnam.
Khoi is also an organizer and co-founder of the artists' residency program EAW in Dong Nai.
Through his art, Khoi explores contradictions, believing that this inquiry can help viewers deepen their understanding of humanity's relationship with the world, fostering greater empathy and responsibility toward each other and non-human entities. Specifically, he believes that contradictions enable individuals to engage with differing ideologies, cultures, or ways of thinking. Understanding and embracing these new values broadens human perspectives, enhancing awareness of life's diversity. Khoi hopes his art will challenge biases, expand personal viewpoints, and ultimately contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society.
By dismantling and reconstructing broken everyday household electronic objects—items that quietly mediated human actions and experiences—into paradoxical artworks, Khoi examines how identity and perception are shaped between humans and objects. He also considers how ignorance and ambiguity prompt attention to images or objects outside the scope of knowledge, as well as the intricate relationship between humans and technology.
Finally, he views assemblages and autotheory—methods that intertwine personal experience with theoretical frameworks—as tools to restructure creative processes and ways of thinking, exploring the dynamic aspects of art without focusing on fixed meanings. Central to his practice is the Buddhist philosophy that there is no absolute right or wrong, only a network of connections and interactions. This concept, along with Boris Groys' theory of balancing power through contradictions and Hegel's dialectical approach, inspires Khôi to create works that use paradoxes as a means of illuminating complexity and fostering critical reflection. Additionally, Stephen Harold Riggins' perspective on objects as more than mere tools—possessing histories, reflecting identities, and maintaining close communicative relationships with humans—has influenced Khoi's use of household objects in his creations.
